The path of towers and temples

Cesi door of Umbria door of wonders

Cesi-Sant’Onofrio-Sant’Erasmo-Torre Maggiore-Sant’Onofrio-Cesi

This circular excursion starts and finishes in Cesi and allows you to follow trails of the ancient Umbrians, Romans,  Lombards and St.Francis. The path is quite steep but very satisfying, amidst breathtaking views, to discover the traces of the first inhabitants of these mountains, their high-altitude temples, a fortified citadel, passing through dense holm oak woods, among the walls and towers of a mediaeval fortress, up to the summit which is an archaeological area itself.

It starts from the village and continues to the church of St.Onofrio where there is the first view point. Go up the path of the towers as far as the enchanting plateau of St.Erasmo, a  protohistoric area of which the walls from the 5th- 6th cent. B.C. remain.

From here you can admire the Terni basin, Terminillo and the Sabini mountains, as far as the Soratte. There is a Romanesque church dedicated to St.Erasmo on the plateau. Continue uphill along the dirt road and then along a path in the woods on the right. Continue up until just below the summit of Mount Torre Maggiore.

Here, you can rest on the meadows among the remains of two temples and admire a vast panorama. Go down the same path until St.Erasmo, where you turn left towards San Biagio for a different route that finishes in an old water conduit of about a hundred metres (torch needed), to then come out at St.Onofrio.
